Letters received were assigned sequential numbers endorsed with the prefix “A.” Entries include the letter number, name of writer, where written, date written, date received in office, note of contents, action taken, and remarks. Some entries in the first register contain cross-references to letterpress copybooks containing pertinent outgoing letters. A “L.B. … F” column lists the copybook number (e.g. folio or volume 1) and the relevant page number within. Entries for # 1-47,143 are in rough chronological order by date received; however, there are gaps and disorder in the numbering sequence within and across volumes.
