{"value"=>"
Incoming correspondence consists primarily of incoming letters disbound from letterbooks, which are roughly chronological. Items from Letterbooks A – C are numbered and each letterbook has an index; items from Letterbook D are unnumbered.

The bulk of the letters are to Branch Secretary O.C. Wheeler and pertain to contributions and aid society activities. In addition, there are numerous letters from organizing agents. Letterbook D relates to post-war work and the closing of the Branch. Also present is a small amount of loose incoming correspondence, including several letters from the USSC’s Joseph Parrish regarding the history and workings of the USSC that were later published by the Branch as circulars (see draft of California Branch history [1866] below).

Outgoing correspondence consists of letterpress copybooks, the bulk of the letters written by O.C. Wheeler. Items are numbered and all volumes have indexes. Letters mostly pertain to the receipt of contributions, meetings, and USSC matters, and are written to aid societies, organizing agents, USSC personnel, and California politicians.
"}
