abstract
{"value"=>"At Gates's request, he advanced $1,000 to Mr. Yancey [James Jauncey], the commissary at Ticonderoga, in 1776; the man is dead and there is no credit for this money in his accounts; St. Clair has only a private receipt and therefore has not been able to get the claim allowed; asks Gates to certify that the money was advanced for public use, so that he can get it back or at least get a certificate for it, which will be worth four shillings on the pound; congratulates him on his \"matrimonial connection\"; would have done so earlier, but never writes except when forced to."}
