{"value"=>"<p>The subseries States, 1943-1998, (bulk 1956-1966) (5 lin. ft.) contains materials gathered and created by Meier and Rudwick documenting the civil rights struggles in a number of cities and states. Included are notes, interviews, correspondence, newsclippings and other printed material, including published research reports. The states for which the greatest amount of material is represented are Alabama, Georgia, Illinois (particularly Chicago), Kentucky (Louisville), Maryland (especially Baltimore), Mississippi, New Jersey (Newark), North and South Carolina, Tennessee (Memphis and Nashville) and Virginia (Danville and Lynchburg). An extensive file relating to Chicago includes notes and printed material about the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations (CCCO), and research reports prepared by the Chicago Urban League. Significant material represents Mississippi including files about the Mississippi Freedom Democractic Party, the Delta Ministry based in Edwards, notes Meier took on a July 1964 trip to that state and photographs taken in 1947 of Farish Street, in Jackson, Mississippi, the principal black business thoroughfare. Of interest are Meier's correspondence, notes and related material pertaining to the Civic Interest Group's support in Cambridge, Maryland, and the Interracial Council of Newark and the Essex County Intergroup Council (both of New Jersey).</p> <p> Meier's involvement in the civil rights movement in Baltimore during his teaching career at Morgan State College in that city is revealed in the files about Baltimore, 1959-1998, (1959-1963 bulk). The protesting students at Morgan named Meier adult advisor of the Civic Interest Group (CIG), and files of this organization detail Meier's arrest for demonstrating against a segregated restaurant and include minutes of meetings, notes by Meier written as events unfolded, interviews he conducted, correspondence outlining his participation in the Northwood Theatre demonstration, printed material, and a manuscript written by John Fanton concerning CIG activities in communities on the eastern shore of Cheaspeake Bay (1962). Meier's participation in the Northwood Theatre demonstration, which led to the desegration of this theater, is documented by correspondence, his notes, reports by arrested students, Meier's correspondence with the American Association of University Professors concerning his actions, and photographs.</p>"}
