American Historical Asociation files document his role on the 1972 Program Committee, as a member of the J. Franklin Jameson Prize Committee (1990), his participation in the 1998 session on historian Benjamin Quarles and also in 1998, the presentation of the AHA Award for Scholarly Distinction. Meier's 1990 chairmanship of the Organization of American Historians' Program Committee is documented through correspondence files. The Southern Historical Association files detail Meier's service on the 1980 Program Committee, and his chairmanship of the session \"Black Coal Miners in the Southern Applachians\" (1986), as well as a copy of a 1986 interview conducted by John H. Roper concerning Meier's long association with the SHA.
