{"value"=>"<p>The subseries Education, 1936-1957, n.d. (5 lin. ft.) encompasses Meier's report cards from grade and high schools and graduation related material. His files for Oberlin College include reports and printed matter regarding a student effort to desegregate barber shops on campus. Meier was secretary of the committee that spearheaded this action. Meier's studies for his Master's degree at Columbia is documented by two black history papers he wrote on the black church and on Booker T. Washington, in addition to a copy of his thesis, \"The Emergence of Negro Nationalism: A Study of Ideologies - From the American Revolution to the First World War\" (1948).</p> <p>Most significantly in this subseries are several drafts, including the final version, of Meier's dissertation, \"Negro Racial Thought in the Age of Booker T. Washington, ca. 1880-1915.\" There are approximately ten versions of the dissertation; the final and most complete version has been filed first, followed by the other versions. Most of the drafts are not intact and only a few are dated, which made it difficult to assemble completed drafts. Adding to the difficulty in organizing the drafts is the fact that versions of book and dissertation chapters were frequently mixed together during the process of preparing the book Meier wrote based on his dissertation, <span class=\"title\">Negro Racial Thought in the Age of Booker T. Washington, ca. 1880-1915.</span> Thus, it was not always clear which chapter versions were written for the book and which for the dissertation. A sampling of Meier's research notes based on his reading has been retained (one out of eight boxes). Correspondence between Meier and Paul Partington concerning W.E.B. DuBois is also to be found in this series.</p>"}
