{"value"=>"Thomas Gray, sheriff of this county, was drafted in the continental levies, and being in Annapolis at the time was unable to procure a substitute; he must therefore either leave his public business unsettled or procure a substitute at an exorbitant rate; asks that he be discharged by the Governor; a privateer brig of the enemy, the Susannah, Capt. John Hayman, has been plundering at the mouth of the Patuxent; she took twelve vessels; regrets that they have no defence on the water; one galley well manned might have saved fifty times her value."}
