{"value"=>"<p>This series consists of correspondence, manuscripts, publicity material, contracts, and clippings for Hagen's four published books: <span class=\"title\">A Challenge for the Actor</span>(Scribner, 1991), <span class=\"title\">Love for Cooking</span> (Macmillan, 1976), <span class=\"title\">Respect for Acting</span> written with Haskel Frankel (Macmillan, 1973), and her memoir <span class=\"title\">Sources</span> (Performing Arts Journal, 1983). The various manuscript drafts for each of the works provide a valuable glimpse into the evolution of the final text.</p> <p>Much of the correspondence consists of Hagen's decades of voluminous fan mail, especially for <span class=\"title\">Respect for Acting</span> and <span class=\"title\">A Challenge for the Actor</span>; the former was translated into Chinese; the latter into German and Spanish. Included is fan mail from notables such as Eric Bentley, Craig Claiborne, James Coco, Horton Foote, Earle Hyman, Anna Massey, Charles Nelson Reilly, Alexander Schneider, Thomas Tryon, and Amy Wright. Of particular note is a copy of a letter from Julia Child to Hagen's <span class=\"title\">Love for Cooking</span> publicist praising the work.</p> <p>Additional writings include books to which Hagen contributed: <span class=\"title\">Broadway: Day and Night</span> (1992), <span class=\"title\">Broadway Celebrity Cookbook</span> (1988), as well as a translation of Kafka's <span class=\"title\">A Report to the Academy</span> (undated). There are also several typed poems in German possibly by Hagen, probably from the 1920s. Also of special interest is <span class=\"title\">Young Heroines of War Times: Five Short War Stories Illustrated for Girls from 10 to 15</span>, a handwritten and illustrated notebook of stories by an eleven-year-old Hagen in 1930.
