{"value"=>"
This subseries contains highlights from Solotaroff's fifty years of correspondence. This section contains correspondence with notable authors, editors, poets, and publishers. The title \"correspondence highlights\" was designated by the seller of the collection, who isolated these letters from Solotaroff's correspondence. Solotaroff maintained his correspondence in chronological order and in alphabetical order by the last name of his correspondent within each year.

Included in this subseries is Solotaroff's correspondence with Philip Roth. The two met in 1959 at the University of Chicago and maintained a close friendship for almost fifty years, ending with Solotaroff's death in 2008. While few of Solotaroff's letters to Roth are included here, there are almost one hundred letters from Roth. These letters are substantial and contain discussions of Roth's personal and professional lives. He discusses his writing process, progress on The Breast and other works, his identity as a Jewish writer, his opinion of other writers, including Saul Bellow, and his personal life.

This subseries also contains correspondence with Ian McEwan, who discusses his early work with Solotaroff, correspondence with Tom Robbins about Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and Still Life with Woodpecker, over twenty years of correspondence with George Dennison and Hayden Carruth, and correspondence with Norman Mailer, Sue Miller, E. L. Doctorow, and others.
"}
