Of special interest: In 1966 a committee was created to study the adoption by The Times of a crime reporting code. The committee recommended against such a code. In 1969 the New York State Fair Trial-Free Press Conference drafted guidelines governing news reporting and fair trial. Clifton Daniel was chairman of the Guidelines Committee. The New York Daily News decided to oppose any guidelines in any form. The Times decided to adhere to the guidelines. Abe Rosenthal's position on guidelines (memos 2/10/69, 12/22/70) (letter to S.H.
