{"value"=>"<p>The photographs are arranged by show and thereunder chronologically by performance of that particular ballet under the name of the company presenting the ballet. The number after P in the finding aid for ballet productions refers to a specific photograph as each photograph have been numbered individually. An image-by-image list is provided in the box itself at the beginning of each ballet production. All performers appearing in the photographs for that particular show are mentioned in the finding aid, as well as any other person appearing in the photograph, most often Jerome Robbins himself if the photographs were taken during rehearsals. All known photographers are mentioned in the finding aid and it is a thorough cross-section of dance and theatrical photographers active during this period. Martha Swope is used extensively for the New York City Ballet productions, for both rehearsal and performance photographs.</p> <p>The ballet photographs represent Jerome Robbins’ varied career in dance from his early days as a performer through his long association with the New York City Ballet. Particularly well represented are his works from the late sixties (starting with <span class=\"title\">Dances at a Gathering</span>, 1969) to the early eighties with NYCB, although such early significant works with this company such as <span class=\"title\">Afternoon with a Faun</span>, 1953, featuring Tanaquil Le Clercq and Francisco Moncion, <span class=\"title\">The Cage</span>, 1951, with Nora Kaye and Nichalos Magallanes, and <span class=\"title\">The Concert</span>, 1956, are represented. All of his major works are represented. <span class=\"title\">Goldberg Variations</span>, 1971, and <span class=\"title\">Watermill</span>, 1972, fill out multiple boxes in the collection and the photographs for these particular pieces are arranged in the order in which the ballets themselves were performed. Robbins’ early work with Ballet Theatre is also featured, notable particularly for his photographs as a performer in <span class=\"title\">Summer Day</span>, 1947, <span class=\"title\">Three Virgins and a Devil</span>, 1941, (including prints of Carl Van Vechten photographs), and <span class=\"title\">Facsimile</span>, 1946, which represents his work with both as a performer and a choreographer. <span class=\"title\">Fancy Free</span>, 1944, which launched his career as a theatrical choreographer of note and began his long association with Leonard Bernstein, is one of the best represented of this Ballet Theatre ballets among the professional photographs. Robbins’ later work with Opéra de Paris in the late eighties and early nineties is in evidence through performance photographs. Other companies that performed Jerome Robbins’ ballets include such diverse companies as Australian Ballet, Bat Sheva Dance Company, Harkness Ballet, and the Royal Swedish Ballet, all represented in this collection. The production photographs of the ballet company Robbins created, Ballets: U.S.A., are not found in this sub-series but are located in the sub-series Companies.</p>"}
