Both postulate theories of growth suggest that changes in personality are attainable in a structured environment which addresses the progressive issues arising at each stage of development. A “therapeutic milieu” is such an environment, providing a graded series of challenges, which relate to the developmental crisis not yet mastered by the patient. The closing section of this paper looks at rehabilitation programs in a state hospital, exploring the therapeutic opportunities which are offered, with reference to Cummings and Cummings' and Sullivan's theoretical frameworks.</p>"}
