In interaction they are seen to ward off perception, to succumb to and distort experience, and to reverse or compensate in response. Their effect on the session is noted. The need to defend is explored. Expressions of depression, opposition, and ambivalence, as seen to trigger unprocessed countertransferential feelings which arouse the defenses. Early antecedents are explored, and personal and client reactions are distinguished in this therapist's attempt to learn to use her own vulnerability and objectivity for skilled therapeutic interaction.</p>"}
