Permission required from correspondent during his or her lifetime. The correspondence before 1929 consists mainly of personal letters between Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn and documents the early years of their marriage. The 1930's correspondence, with the exception of four letters from Ted Shawn to Ruth St. Denis, consists of a series of letters between Ted Shawn and Lucien Price about Jacob's Pillow and Ted Shawn and his Men Dancers. Shawn used an edited version of these letters for the fifth section of his unpublished autobiography. (For a manuscript of proposed autobiography, see section III of this collection.) Correspondence from the 1940's through the 1960's consists of both personal and business letters, mainly written to Shawn by notable people in the dance world. A large portion of the letters were written by modern, ethnic, and ballet teachers and dancers from all over the world in regard to the summer programs at Jacob's Pillow. Approximately 400 letters are between Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, mostly from the eight final years of St. Denis' life. Within each of the six time periods in this section, letters appear alphabetically under the correspondent's last name. For example, to locate letters written by Ruth St. Denis, one would have to look under the letter āsā in each time period. When Shawn is the correspondent, letters appear under the last name of the individual who received the letter. For example, letters written by Ted Shawn to Arthur Todd appear under the name Todd as TS/Todd, Arthur
"}
