{"value"=>"<p>This sub-series contains black and white theatrical sheets of actors in a variety of roles. The name penny plain comes from the cost which was \"a penny\". These sheets were created for the toy theater trade which was popular during this time of home entertainment. The black and white sheets were intended to be hand colored at home, mounted on cardboard and used in a puppet theater type setting. Some of the actors' portraits in this series include T. P. Cooke in a variety of roles, Maria Foote, Edmund Kean, Charles, John and Fanny Kemble, William Macready, O. Smith and Madame Vestris, among others.</p>"}
