{"value"=>"<p>The Safety Department maintained a uniformed and plain clothes police force as well as a squad of fire guards. Under the direction of retired Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Police Department John J. Sullivan, this unit was responsible for the protection of visitors and property, the prevention of crime, fire safety and the enforcement of all regulations pertaining to the Fair site. Together with Welfare Department social workers, the force also aided the sick and injured, assisted lost visitors, and was responsible for lost and unclaimed property. During the 1939 season, a mounted unit of Native Americans from the U.S. Government-run Haskell Institute of Lawrence, Kansas served as the honor guard and acted as military escort for all formal functions. Among the records that document the activities of this department are the correspondence, memoranda and reports sent and received by Sullivan, which capture information related to investigations and arrests stemming from drunk and disorderly behavior, theft, indecency, solicitation, racketeering, sexual abuse of minors and other criminal activities. Also included are reports of deaths on the Fairgrounds, notably those of two detectives who were killed when a bomb discovered in the British Pavilion detonated during removal. Personnel records offer sociological information on age, trade, marital status and language skills. A sampling of blotters of the police patrol and fire guard note roll call, patrol assignments and unusual occurrences; while the telephone logs - a record of incoming and outgoing calls to the Safety Department - suggest a typical rowdy day at the Fair.</p>"}
