Lawrence, the Displays Department managed the operation of the public address and other sound systems at the Fair; ran the Democracity show in the Perisphere; and staged the elaborate fireworks shows in the Lagoon of Nations and Fountain Lake (renamed Liberty Lake for the 1940 season). The productions were technically complex feats requiring the mechanical synchronization of effects created by fireworks, lights, water, gas flame, and music. The 1939 Lagoon show alone employed two light operators, three water operators, four soundmen and a forty-four piece orchestra. Most of the records here originated in the office of Fireworks Director, Frank P. Duffield, and include correspondence with fireworks, lighting, sound and specialized equipment manufacturers, fireworks inventories and reports, cost projections, timesheets and wage schedules. The Lagoon of Nations file contains cue sheets for thematic music to accompany various displays. The corporate sponsor records document the department's campaign to earn revenue through outside sponsorships, and includes descriptions of set pieces featuring products, slogans and insignias. The Perisphere file contains a report recommending a script overhaul and mechanical adjustments to enliven the 1940 production of the Democracity show, as well as detailed instructions to ushers.</p>"}
