abstract
{"value"=>"An express has just arrived bringing the sad news of the loss of Savannah and Gen. Howe's orders for a retreat, which is not practicable as no reliable guide can be found; has called a council of war composed of the officers of the Fort, and the most respectable citizens who are unanimous in the opinion that a vigorous defense is their only safety; he has an ample supply of provision, and the heart of every soldier is filled with spirit and resolution to conquer or die; hopes Gen Howe will support him; in a postscript states that if retreat is still thought best and a guide can be sent, he will obey orders."}
