{"value"=>"
This subseries includes manuscripts and edited typescripts, contract information, mail from readers, press relations and reviews of books published by F. M. Esfandiary and as FM-2030. Esfandiary's earliest published books include his novels Day of Sacrifice, The Beggar, and Identity Card. By the later 1960s and into the 1970s, Esfandiary attempted an overview of the social, economic, political and educational infrastructures of the postindustrial age in the books Optimism One, UpWingers, and Telespheres. The works of the 1970s represent the turn in the author's interest away from fiction and towards sociological analysis. Esfandiary contrasted concern in utopian thought over the dangers of modern technology through his positive diagnosis of society's progress in the themes of abundance and immortality. He supported his theories of the future through a devotion to scientific advancements in medicine and communications. Breakthroughs in cutting edge technologies including, genetics, plastic surgery, prosthesis, telecommunication and space travel ultimately led Esfandiary to conceive of transhumanism as a way to describe life in the postindustrial era. He changed his name to FM-2030 in 1988 and published Are You a Transhuman?, a self-diagnostic test for individuals wishing to discover their preparedness for the era of the transhuman, in 1989.
"}
