Sonnabend served as the chairman of the scientific committee and as a member of the Institutional Review Board from 1983 until his resignation in 1985 over differences in opinion regarding the AIDS threat to heterosexuals. After Sonnabend's departure, the AIDS Medical Foundation merged with the National AIDS Research Foundation in September 1985 to form what is now known as the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR).</p>"}
