These letters range from newsy narratives to birthday and anniversary messages, and include some notes they scribbled to each other on certain occasions and notes that evidently accompanied gifts or mementos. The following list attempts to highlight letters of special interest. 1888: Her letters about her (second) pregnancy, Jan. 10, 17, 19; his letters to family about the baby's illness and death, and breaking the news to her, also condolence notes from family members, July 18-Aug. 2. 1889: His letters about the yellow fever scare in Chattanooga, Sept. 21-28. 1891: His note to her on her birthday, noting that the cornerstone for the Chattanooga Times' new building was laid on the same day, May 7. 1894: Her note to him on their 11th wedding anniversary, with reference to two dead babies and one living child, Feb. 28. 1895: His letters about the negotiations for the New York Mercury and the Nashville American, May 2, June 11, Sept. 27, 28, Oct. 19, 21, 26. 1896: His letter noting that he is juggling negotiations for three newspapers, March 27; her letters encouraging him in the negotiations, Apr.-May; her letters bitterly complaining about life in Chattanooga and hoping he will succeed in New York so that they can move there, May 10, 11; her letters about problems of her current pregnancy, June 7,8; his letters detailing the negotiations in New York, June 12-July 25; his letter about the receiver's sale of the NYT and her reply, Aug. 13; his first letter from the NYT's office, Aug. 18; his letters on settling the NYT's affairs, cutting costs, increasing advertising and circulation, and making editorial improvements, Aug. 27-Nov. 1898: His letters on arranging an apartment in New York, Sept. 21, 23.</p>"}
