{"value"=>"<p>Frederick Vanderbilt Field was born in 1905, the second son of William and Lila. He was educated at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn. and Harvard University. After graduating from Harvard in 1927, he attended the London School of Economics for a year, where he became interested in socialism. Upon his return to New York in 1928, he met Edward C. Carter and began to work at the Institute for Pacific Relations (IPR) as an assistant secretary. In 1929 he married Elizabeth Brown and together they traveled to Russia, China, Japan, and the Philippines to gather research for IPR. They returned to the United States in 1930 to publish their findings and Field began to work full-time at the IPR as Carter's assistant. He would remain there until 1940.</p> <p>In 1936 Elizabeth divorced Field and retained custody of their daughter, Lila. He was married again in 1937 to Edith Chamberlain Hunter. They had a daughter, Gail, in 1938. In 1983 he wrote a memoir, From Right to Left: An Autobiography.</p>"}
