{"value"=>"<p>The theatrical subseries includes all productions that were presented as live performances including plays, musicals, revues, and opera. It includes works that Wolfe wrote and/or directed, as well as works staged at the Public Theater while he was the artistic director.</p> <p>The whole of Wolfe's theatrical career is represented. This starts with his earliest plays, dating from the 1970s, which were written and performed while Wolfe was in college, until the Broadway staging of <span class=\"title\">Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus</span> in 2019. Most of these works were presented on Broadway or Off-Broadway (usually at the Public Theater), with some exceptions. Wolfe was involved in many productions that did not premiere in New York City, especially early on in his career. He frequently worked with the Crossroads Theatre, a New Jersey theater dedicated to the work of Black artists, as well as the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, California. Wolfe also directed the Lyric Opera of Chicago's staging of <span class=\"title\">Amistad</span> in 1997, and oversaw the European runs of many of his productions.</p> <p>This subseries consists of correspondence, professional and candid photographs, scripts (often with notes and edits), set and costume designs, notes, scores, press and publicity materials, programs, tickets, ID cards for Wolfe, schedules, awards and awards ceremony materials, moving image and audio recordings, and opening night gifts. Gifts are varied and include a silk scarf, a music box, a statuette, paperweights, a mousepad, playing cards, and dog tags. Moving image and audio recordings include read-throughs, performances, and press. Both physical awards and items from ceremonies, such as programs, are included. Of particular note is the Tony presenter's booklet for Wolfe's win for <span class=\"title\">Angels in America: Millennium Approaches</span>.</p> <p>The productions that Wolfe was creatively involved in are the most-well represented. Of Wolfe's pre-<span class=\"title\">Colored Museum</span> work, <span class=\"title\">Paradise!</span> has the most material, with script drafts, programs, a score, and audio recordings of performances. Overall, <span class=\"title\">The Colored Museum</span>; <span class=\"title\">Jelly's Last Jam</span>; <span class=\"title\">Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk</span>; and <span class=\"title\">Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed</span> are the most comprehensively covered. Productions staged at the Public Theater while Wolfe was artistic director are usually represented through correspondence and releases.</p>"}
