Dating from 1990 to 1998, and arranged alphabetically by file name, this subseries chronicles the origins of the project through correspondence, background research, project descriptions, and quartet composition examples. These files contain extensive notation, tuning and melody notes, and file directories that Amacher maintained after the project's initial abandonment in 1992.</p> <p>The correspondence consists of a 1991 letter from Amacher to Thomas Kessler that mentions collaborating with the Kronos Quartet, as well as letters between Amacher and David Harrington from 1996 about further collaborations. There is also a file labeled \"Business\" that contains correspondence, agreements, and notes about applying for a grant. Subseries VI.B. features other grant application materials for <span class=\"title\">The Levi-Montalcini Variations</span>.</p> <p>Notation is heavily represented in the subseries. Much of the notation is handwritten by Amacher, often without staves, and with accompanying notes. Some sheet music and scores are also present, along with files titled \"Core Melodies,\" \"String Tunings,\" \"Tunings,\" and \"Voice Leading Chart\" that contain composition drafts and notes.</p> <p>Of special interest are notes on \"endotonality,\" a term Amacher coined that describes certain tones perceptible to the human ear, and which was central to <span class=\"title\">The Levi-Montalcini Variations</span>. Files labeled \"Text to Edit\" hold additional endotonality notes, as well as annotated descriptions, agendas, scenarios, and research plans.</p> <p>Also included in this subseries are printed DAT backup file directories, delay tests, and notes on Pro Tools, mixing, and equalizing.
