{"value"=>"<p>The Committee was organized by Mr. Hertzberg in March of 1946 at the offices of the India League of America. Under the chairmanship of Pearl S. Buck it lobbied for increased food aid for India. It sponsored the American Famine Mission to India which visited India in the summer of 1946 on a fact-finding mission.</p> <p>The papers (1946-47) consist of correspondence of Hazel Whitman (Mrs. Sidney Hertzberg) and of Hazel Myers with voluntary aid organizations, members of the public, and with members of the mission including Sidney Hertzberg and Theodore W. Schultz, the mission's leader. Included are cables from prominent persons approving the Committee's public appeal to President Truman for increased food aid for India. Included also are miscellaneous memoranda, financial and publicity papers, and a draft (Dec. 1946) of the Committee's final report.</p>"}
