{"value"=>"<p>The Gandhi Films Committee of the Gandhi National Memorial Trust (of New Delhi, India) sought to collect and preserve film footage of Mahatma Gandhi for the purpose of making educational documentaries about Gandhi's life. Sidney Hertzberg was the American representative of the Committee.</p> <p>The papers consist of correspondence relating to the acquisition of original film footage of Mahatma Gandhi from motion picture studios and from private sources and the preparation and showing of three documentary films about Gandhi (\"The Voice of India\", \"Seaside Prayers\", and \"Noakhali\"). The papers include extensive correspondence with Devadas Gandhi, the Committee's chairman, and with Chandrashanker Shukla, its secretary. Included is correspondence with the estate of James A. Mills relative to the \"Noakhali\" film which Mills made with Gandhi in India. A letter (9/11/51) from C. Shukla contains a lengthy \"background\" narrative describing Gandhi's trek through the Noakhali District in 1947 during the riots and massacres between Hindus and Muslims.</p>"}
