{"value"=>"<p>The General Correspondence consists of a chronological file in the period 1932-84 and an alphabetical file.</p> <p>In the chronological file the correspondence is sparse in the earlier period (1932-41). Beginning in 1942 there is some correspondence with readers, subscribers and associates relative to the dissolution of <span class=\"title\">Uncensored</span>. In the period 1943-44 there is correspondence from several friends undergoing basic training in the armed forces. Included in the chronological file is correspondence from the following persons: Roger Baldwin (3/4/76, 3/17/76, n.d.); Harry Elmer Barnes (1/16/42); John Nicholas Beffel (1945, 12/15/53, 12/24/53); Chester Bowles (1/9/42, 6/6/45, 1/15/46, 11/12/46, 12/13/48, 1/26/51, 4/1/65, 7/20/65); Stuart Chase (1/22/42, 11/4/73); Norman Cousins (12/28/71); C. Hartley Grattan (4/27/45, 7/12/45; Frank Hanighen (2/21/42, 8/8/46, 8/17/46, 8/22/46); Quincy Howe (1/26/49, 6/14/54, 6/24/54, n.d.); Milton Mayer (1/10/45, 6/7/45, 5/31/46, 10/23/46; Norman Thomas (9/11/45, 12/13/45, 10/31/46, 8/132/47, 12/6/54, 7/16/56, 1/3/67); Oswald Garrison Villard (7/11/42, 11/6/45); and James A. Weschler (9/4/57). The alphabetical file includes correspondence relating to Friends of India, B.P. Koirala, Harry Leland Mitchell, Cushman Reynolds, and Leela P. Trikamdas.</p> <p>The Friends of India was an informal group organized by Sidney Hertzberg, Dorothy Norman, and Ved Mehta to promote the discussion of the status of human rights in India. It issued a public statement (published in the New York Times 3/5/76) condemning the suppression of human rights during Indira Gandhi's \"emergency rule\". Included are correspondence (1975-76), drafts of a statement on human rights and miscellaneous papers.</p> <p>The B. P. Koirala file consists of correspondence (1977) and papers relative to an international appeal by human rights groups for the release of B.P. Koirala, former prime minister of Nepal who was imprisoned for treason by King Birendra.</p> <p>The Harry Leland Mitchell file includes correspondence (1942-82) consisting mainly of short notes by Mitchell attached to printed ephemera relating to the Southern Tenant Farmers Union, its successor, the National Farm Labor Union, and the National Sharecroppers Fund. Much of the ephemera relates to Mitchell's pleas for financial aid and to his efforts to improve social and economic conditions in the rural South. The file contains a few replies by Mr. Hertzberg.</p> <p>The Cushman Reynolds file contains correspondence (1942-49) from Reynolds while he was undergoing basic training in the U.S. Army to become a meteorologist. Included is a file of letters (1946) addressed to Capt. Reynolds, at Langley Field, from personal friends and from his fiancé, Virginia Wells Lasher, who was residing at Nashville, Tennessee.</p> <p>The Leela P. Trikamdas file consists of correspondence (1971-79) relating to political affairs in India. She was the widow of Purshottam Trikamdas, Indian nationalist and leader of the Socialist Party of India.</p>"}
