{"value"=>"<p>Subseries I.A., dated from 1987 to 2017, contains files from all of Proulx's major works, including her early \"how-to\" gardening and cooking publications like <span class=\"title\">Garden and the American Landscape</span>.</p> <p>Novels represented in Subseries I.A. include <span class=\"title\">Accordion Crimes</span>, <span class=\"title\">Barkskins</span>, <span class=\"title\">Bird Cloud</span>, <span class=\"title\">Postcards</span>, <span class=\"title\">The Shipping News</span>, and <span class=\"title\">That Old Ace in the Hole</span>. This subseries holds book proposals; character and setting notes; chapter titles; handwritten and typescript drafts; galleys with editor's comments; cover design drafts; copy edited drafts; correspondence with publishing professionals regarding the work; and audiobook scripts. Some novels, such as <span class=\"title\">Postcards</span>, have accompanying chapter drawings by Proulx.</p> <p>In 2008, Proulx collaborated with photographer Martin Stupinch on the non-fiction work <span class=\"title\">Red Desert: History of A Place</span>. Proulx wrote ten of the collection's thirty-eight essays. Subseries I.A. holds correspondence with other essay contributors; multiple rounds of page proofs; photographs; book mock-ups; and other ephemera related to publishing such as errata lists, contributor word counts, and applications for grant funding.</p> <p>Project proposals, outlines, and drafts related to Proulx's nonfiction work prior to <span class=\"title\">Heart Songs</span> (1988), such as <span class=\"title\">Sweet and Hard Cider</span> (1980) and <span class=\"title\">The Complete Dairy Foods Cookbook</span> (1982), are present. Proulx has repeatedly expressed that these early commissioned books remain out of print, as she does not consider them a part of her oeuvre. A copy of <span class=\"title\">Sweet and Hard Cider</span> is held in Series IV: Research Materials with Proulx's library.</p> <p>The subseries also contains drafts, story fragments, correspondence, and notebooks related to two unpublished and abandoned works: <span class=\"title\">Poems of the Cook</span> and <span class=\"title\">Dead Man's Bog</span>.</p> <p>Materials related to Proulx's 2022 nonfiction book, <span class=\"title\">Fen, Bog & Swamp: A Short History of Peatland Destruction and Its Role in the Climate Crisis</span> and <span class=\"title\">The New Yorker</span> essay \"Swamps Can Protect Against Climate Change, If We Only Let Them\" are not present in the collection.</p>"}
