{"value"=>"<p>Documentary about the 1947 Journey of Reconciliation, also called the First Freedom Ride, a civil rights protest organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) to challenge segregation on interstate buses. In 1944, eleven years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Irene Morgan rejected that same demand on an interstate bus headed to Maryland from Gloucester, Virginia. Led by Thurgood Marshall, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund represented Morgan's case <span class=\"title\">Irene Morgan v. Commonwealth of Virginia</span>, which was appealed to the US Supreme Court in 1946. The Court ruled that segregation in interstate travel violated the Constitution's Interstate Commerce Clause, but Southern states refused to enforce the law. In response, an interracial group of sixteen activists, including Nathan Wright, organized a two-week journey travelling together on buses across upper Southern states. This is considered the first Freedom Ride, predating the more well-known Freedom Rides of the 1960s.
