Following the body of a January 1822 letter from Wordsworth to Robert Southey, headed with the note: \"Turn over— / The Girls [Southey's daughter Edith and his niece Sara Coleridge] may be amused—;\" begins, \"Critics, right honorable Bard! decree / Laurels to some, a nightshade wreath to thee, / Whose Muse a sure though late revenge hath ta'en / Of harmless Abel's death by murdering Cain.\" This quatrain and the next were first published by William Knight in his <em>Poetical Works of William Wordsworth</em>, 8 volumes (1896), but the letter itself he had apparently not seen.
