{"value"=>"<p>This series consists of country-specific material, not necessarily related to or generated from Armstrong's trips but from her work in Africa in general. Each country's file or files contains one or more of the following: correspondence, notes, reports, meeting minutes, and printed matter (newsletters, newspaper clippings, articles, and bulletins, among others). Many of the documents were generated by various divisions of the United Nations, the U.S. government, and country embassies. Some of this material was produced by the government of the country or an organization within the country, while others were produced by non-governmental organizations or non-profit institutions in the United States. For example, in the Angola section, there is a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture on the agricultural economies of countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. In addition, there are copies of various issues of <span class=\"title\">La Voix de la Nation Angolaise</span>, a newspaper published in the Belgian Congo that promoted independence for Angola from Portugal. Interspersed throughout this material are notes by Armstrong and letters to and from Armstrong on behalf of different organizations; in one instance, she wrote a letter to the Portuguese embassy on behalf of a group meeting to discuss Angola at American University (1962). In another instance, in 1960, Armstrong wrote a memo to Senator Humphrey's office about the food situation in the Congo; she most likely wrote this when she was working for Kennedy. Many of the countries are referred to with past names, ones that they had before independence or actual formation.</p>"}
