scopecontent
{"value"=>"
The Research subseries, dating from 1943 to 2003, reveal Dunne's research interests through periodical clippings, notes, correspondence, photographs, and transcripts. The subseries also holds files from three projects that never came to fruition; one was an unproduced screenplay, Water, co-written with Didion that inspired one of Dunne's novels. Files from Dunne's threatened 1973 libel lawsuit against The New Republic are also in the subseries, along with annotated books and unrealized project ideas. Most subject files in the subseries relate to titles in Subseries II.A. Books and Subseries II.B. Journalism. Consequently, some research materials appear across multiple subseries.

Crimes, particularly murder cases, are heavily detailed in these files. Dunne created subject files on the murders of Eula Love, Marvin Ashley, Matthew Shepard, Ralph Bigelow, and Georgette Bauerdorf. He also kept files on the Rulo cult murders, the 1995 O. J. Simpson trial, the Virginia Foat trial, and last meal requests and confessions for multiple criminal cases.

Catholicism is also well-represented in Dunne's research files. Dunne maintained files about the Roman Catholic Church, including correspondence and copies of books by his close friend, laicized Catholic priest Eugene Kennedy.

Other subjects covered in Dunne's files are sexual assault cases, patriotism and military operations, Irish people, people working in the Hollywood film industry, and journalists.

Dunne's file on the murder of Georgette Bauerdorf holds copies of graphic crime scene photographs.
"}
