{"value"=>"
IBW held Summer Research Symposia (SRS) in 1971, 1972, and 1974.

The first ran from June 12 to July 24, 1971. Black scholars including C.L.R. James, St. Clair Drake, and others led week-long lectures and seminars for participants and delivered public lectures on the the theme of \"The Role of the Black Scholar in the Struggle of the Black Community.\" Participants also engaged in a collective research project analyzing news sources for reports on various aspects of Black American life during the late 1960s.

Although a full symposium was not held in 1972, participants from the 1971 symposium reconvened the next August to analyze the previous year's lectures for potential publication. In addition, William Brown gave a series of lectures on African historiography.

In 1974, another large symposium was held, running from July 22 to August 30. It included a public lecture series on \"Black Struggle and the International Crisis\" which ran in early August, and a three-day Summer's End Symposium on the same theme which ran the last week of August.

These files include planning documents, lecture transcripts, and clippings and summaries of newspaper reports written as part of the SRS '71 research project.
"}
