In <em>Poems</em> (1850), Barrett Browning \"arranged\" that this poem should \"come next\" to \"The Cry of the Children\" in order \"to appear impartial as to national grievances.\" First published in December 1847 in the 1848 issue of the anti-slavery annual <em>The Liberty Bell</em>.
