{"value"=>"
Subseries III.B. features fifty-four of Charlip's notebooks and journals that he maintained from the 1960s to the 2000s, with the majority dating from the 1970s. They are arranged chronologically.

The notebooks and journals contain a mixture of writings and notes about Charlip's dance and theater activities, teaching appointments, and books; personal writings and lists; fictional and nonfictional stories; and sketches and drawings of costumes, dancers, and choreography. Charlip's first notes and ideas regarding specific dances, workshops, and books appear in some notebooks.

Forty-five of the notebooks were grouped together, numbered, and described in an original inventory of Charlip's collection, completed by artist and archivist John Held, Jr. in 2007. Copies of the pages from Held, Jr.'s inventory describing the notebooks and journals are located in box 35 (the full inventory is held in series VIII). The numbers from his numbering system are listed on appropriate folders for each notebook. In his inventory, Held, Jr. gives approximate dates for notebooks, as most are undated or feature a single date somewhere in the pages. He also describes the content of every notebook, sometimes quite thoroughly; these descriptions are useful in locating certain subjects or writing forms across the notebooks.
"}
