{"value"=>"
Subseries I.A. holds subject files for Charlip's dance and theater activities. Dating from the 1940s to 2010 and arranged alphabetically by subject, these files largely cover administrative and logistical matters for dance and theater pieces, performances, and individuals and companies with whom Charlip worked. This subseries contains notes, lists, correspondence, contracts and agreements, and financial planning documents and invoices. Some costume and set designs are also included.

There are subject files on specific dance and theater works, such as Harlequin and the Gift of His Friends, a children's opera adaptation of Charlip's book, Harlequin and the Gift of Many Colors, performed at the San Francisco Arts Education Project's Event '97. This is the most represented file in the subseries, with Charlip's extensive notes, research materials, permission forms, correspondence, and assorted drafts.

Other works represented here include All the Rage, Internal Dance Number One, Ludwig and Lou, Ten Imaginary Dances, and Young Omelet. In addition, there are administrative files and correspondence for Every Little Movement, a benefit concert for Charlip following his stroke; Charlip's notebook and research materials for the 1970 Japan World Exposition; and agreements, correspondence, and designs for Air Mail Dances performed by other people. Subseries I.B. contains Charlip's Air Mail Dances choreography.

The subject files chronicle Charlip's collaborations with others during the 1980s and 1990s, notably Neil Marcus, Lucas Hoving, and June Watanabe. There are permission forms, correspondence, and Charlip's performance notes for each. Also present are files on several dance companies and performance locations, such as the Concert Dance Company of Boston, The Dance Company (NSW), National Theater of the Deaf Company, Capp Street, Contraband, and the Exploratorium at Zaccho Dance Theater.

A significant amount of exempt forms, reports, and agreements for Brooklyn Earth, Inc., Charlip's nonprofit organization that supported his dance work, are held here. These materials date from 1981 to 2005, and are useful in determining how Charlip managed his finances.

Some materials in the subject files do pertain to the creative production of dance and theater works. Of special interest are Charlip's set design illustrations for Paul Goodman's Jonah, performed at the American Place Theatre in 1966. There are also costume designs and lists Charlip prepared for various projects, including Air Mail Dances and the Viola Farber Dance Company. Box 2 contains unidentified costume designs from the 1960s. Additional costume designs and lists are in the notebooks and journals in series III, while physical costumes are held in subseries I.D.
"}
