Files are arranged by date.</p> <p>Contained here are examples of early writing by Schanberg with drafts and clippings from Harvard University and the 3rd Armored Division newspaper. Also held here is a 1968 copy of <span class=\"title\">Ramparts</span>, with Schanberg contributing to the story on the 1968 Democratic National Convention protests and a file for his 1971 article in <span class=\"title\">Foreign Affairs</span> on East Pakistan.</p> <p>Also held in this subseries is Schanberg's article for <span class=\"title\">The Washington Monthly</span>, \"The Murder of <span class=\"title\">New York Newsday</span>.\" Originally pitched to <span class=\"title\">Esquire</span>, Schanberg's article details the takeover of <span class=\"title\">New York Newsday</span> by the Times Mirror Company and the controversial decision to close the paper. Contained here are drafts, research, and interviews with <span class=\"title\">Newsday</span> staff, including the CEO of Times Mirror, Mark Willes.</p> <p>After the closing of <span class=\"title\">Newsday</span>, Schanberg pursued freelance opportunities. In 1996, <span class=\"title\">LIFE</span> published \"Six Cents An Hour\" detailing child labor in sporting goods manufacturing. These files contain notebooks, notes and outlines, interviews, photographs, media appearances, and correspondence. Contained with correspondence are files documenting his contract dispute with the magazine. Also present are subject files related to child labor around the world.</p> <p>In 1999, Schanberg was hired as the investigations editor for <span class=\"title\">APBNews.com</span>. Files here consist of story ideas; investigative work on Congressional crime and judges; New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly's connection to the tobacco industry; and a file on the closing of the website after it went bankrupt. Also held here are Schanberg's subject files from <span class=\"title\">APBnews</span>.</p> <p>In 2001, Schanberg began to write for the Manhattan neighborhood papers <span class=\"title\">West Side Spirit</span> and <span class=\"title\">Our Town</span>. These files contain drafts of various columns documenting post-9/11 New York and the transition from the Giuliani administration to the Bloomberg administration.</p> <p>In 2002, Schanberg wrote the article \"A Journey Through The Tangled Case of the Central Park Jogger\" for <span class=\"title\">The Village Voice</span>, soon after he was hired as a columnist for the <span class=\"title\">Voice</span>. These files consist of drafts, correspondence, and research, and document 2000's New York City, the Bush Administration, and the Iraq War. Also held here are Schanberg's <span class=\"title\">Village Voice</span> subject files.</p> <p>Also present in this subseries are correspondence, notes, clippings, marketing material, and outlines related to Schanberg's writing in anthology collections: <span class=\"title\">Reporting Vietnam: American Journalism 1959-1975</span>, published by the Library of America; and <span class=\"title\">Beyond the Killing Fields</span>, Schanberg's collection of war writing.</p>"}
