For Schanberg's writing and research on the closing of <span class=\"title\">New York Newsday</span> see Subseries I.E.</p> <p>A continuation of his <span class=\"title\">Times</span> \"New York\" column, Schanberg's <span class=\"title\">Newsday</span> column focused on power and how it was used and abused in New York. These files contain column ideas, clippings, and drafts of his final five <span class=\"title\">Newsday</span> columns. Schanberg's column files are followed by reader correspondence reacting to the closing of <span class=\"title\">New York Newsday</span>, Schanberg's <span class=\"title\">Newsday</span> biography and headshots, and various photographs of Schanberg at conferences and in the <span class=\"title\">Newsday</span> office.</p> <p>A common target of Schanberg's columns was New York Senator Alphonse D'Amato. Schanberg's D'Amato files contain clippings, notes, and drafts of columns; notes and research; correspondence; and a file on a proposed book on D'Amato by Schanberg and Martin Bergman. Book files consist of drafts, outline, contracts, and a letter indicating Schanberg's withdrawal from the project. Also contained with the D'Amato files are subject files on various figures and subjects related to D'Amato, including: campaign finance and ethics violations; the crack buy publicity stunt by D'Amato and United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Rudy Giuliani; and the Housing and Urban Development scandal involving D'Amato.</p> <p>From 1990 to 1991, Schanberg wrote a number of columns on the Gulf War. These files contain clippings and drafts of his columns; drafts of the article \"Censoring for Political Security\" for the <span class=\"title\">Washington Journalism Review</span>; and notes, clippings, transcripts, and drafts of Schanberg's statement before the Senate Committe on Governmental Affairs. Also contained here are Schanberg's files for the court case, Nation Magazine v. United States Department of Defense.</p> <p>Following the Gulf War files are files on the <span class=\"title\">New York Daily News</span> columnist Mike McAlary and the Pecora and Bower lawsuit. These files contain drafts, notes, research, correspondence, and court files. These files are followed by Police Corruption, which contains notes, drafts, and clippings. Also held here are subject files chronicling incidents involving police, racial issues, and crime under Mayor David Dinkins administration.</p> <p>A group of notes and clippings that Schanberg called \"The Press\" cover his growing interest in media criticism. Divided into three parts, these files begin with his work at the <span class=\"title\">Times</span>, and continue through <span class=\"title\">Newsday</span> and beyond.</p> <p>From 1990 to 1993, Schanberg wrote a number of columns about the development of Roosevelt Raceway, a former racetrack on Long Island. These files contain drafts, notes, clippings, and research for his columns; reader reaction correspondence; and subject files specific to Roosevelt Raceway, including files on various developers, politicians, and organizations.</p> <p>Dating back to his column for the <span class=\"title\">Times</span>, real estate developer and businessman Donald Trump was a regular target of Schanberg. The Donald Trump files, span 1982 to 2012, and contain drafts and clippings of Schanberg's columns on Trump, including some <span class=\"title\">New York Times</span> columns and a 2006 <span class=\"title\">Village Voice</span> column. Also present is correspondence, reader reactions, a 1988 letter from Trump to Schanberg, and a copy of a 1995 letter from Trump to Anthony Marro, editor of <span class=\"title\">Newsday</span>, in response to a Schanberg column. There are also files related to Trump's attempt to evict tenants from his property, 100 Central Park South; the failed development of Trump City on the west side of Manhattan; the Wollman Rink development; a domed stadium proposal; Trump's feud with Mayor Ed Koch; a 1987 file on Trump as a political candidate; and a file on Trump developments in Atlantic City.</p> <p>Arranged at the end of the subseries are Schanberg's general subject files. These files contain a variety of topics he was interested in and pursued as stories for his <span class=\"title\">Newsday</span> and <span class=\"title\">Times</span> columns. Files may contain notes, clippings, photographs, correspondence, and drafts. Subjects of note include: President George H.W.
