{"value"=>"<p>Subseries I.B details Schanberg's reporting and writing on Cambodia between 1970 and 2013. These files address Schanberg's research, experiences in Cambodia, reporting, and the adaptation of his writings into the film, <span class=\"title\">The Killing Fields</span>. Files are arranged chronologically by date, with photographs arranged at the end.</p> <p>The subseries begins with notebooks, drafts, dispatches, and cables charting Schanberg's pre-1975 coverage of Cambodia, to the build up to the 1975 Fall of Phnom Penh. Also contained here are copies of his 1975 diary manuscript, working files for an unpublished memoir, subject files on topics relevant to Cambodia, and clippings by and about Schanberg. Items of note include: a note from Dith Pran asking Schanberg to get his family out of Cambodia; various cables from Pran; correspondence with American photojournalist, Al Rockoff, and British journalist, Jon Swain; correspondence and interview transcripts with Ambassadors John Gunther Dean and Emory C. Swan; a draft by Schanberg admitting to praying for Pran's safe return; and notes and clippings about President Richard Nixon and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.</p> <p>Also held with pre-1975 files are various maps of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, and Southeast Asia; miscellaneous ephemera including Schanberg's passport and Dith Pran's business card; and awards. Closing out these files are articles for other publications including <span class=\"title\">The New Republic</span>, <span class=\"title\">Saturday Review</span>, and <span class=\"title\">The Nation</span>.</p> <p>Files from Schanberg's <span class=\"title\">New York Times Magazine</span> piece, \"The Death and Life of Dith Pran\" chronicle Pran's experiences during the Khmer Rouge takeover, and his escape from Cambodia in 1979. These files hold drafts and edits of the article; notebooks from Schanberg's reunion with Pran; outlines, notes, research, and correspondence, including an exchange with Gerhard Leo, the East German journalist who made contact with Pran; messages brought to Pran at Surin Refugee Camp; a file on Pran's family after their relocation to San Francisco; various clippings and reprints of the article; and reader reaction correspondence, including letters from Elie Wiesel, Joan Baez, and Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. There is also a file on the reprint of the article for <span class=\"title\">The New York Times Magazine</span> centennial issue and exhibits at New York Public Library and New York Historical Society.</p> <p>The article on Pran's return was later turned into a book of the same name published by Viking Press. These files contain correspondence, contracts, royalty statements, drafts, and galleys. Also held here is an unpublished manuscript of Dith Pran's account of his life in Cambodia.</p> <p>Files from <span class=\"title\">The Killing Fields</span> adaptation holds proposals, correspondence with producer David Puttnam, contracts and agreements, cables, memos, and notes from the film's production. There is also an interview with director Roland Joffe, press clippings, reaction correspondence, and film posters.</p> <p>Schanberg continued to cover Cambodia for other publications throughout the rest of his life. The <span class=\"title\">New York Newsday</span> Cambodia files contain copies of columns written on Cambodian issues, and research files covering various reports from the Cambodian Documentation Commission, Oxfam, Amnesty International, and The International Rescue Committee Oral History Project. Contained here are also files on the murder of Haing S. Ngor, and a screenplay by Larry Gelbart. In addition to his columns, Schanberg returned to Cambodia in 1989, writing a series of articles for <span class=\"title\">Newsday</span>. Included here are notebooks, drafts, clippings and correspondence, and files related to travel arrangements and expenses. Photographs are also present, including shots of Schanberg with Pran and Joffé. There is also a file on a 1991 trip Schanberg took to Cambodia with his daughter.</p> <p>In 1997, Schanberg again returned to Cambodia to cover the arrest and trial of Pol Pot for <span class=\"title\">Vanity Fair</span>. These files contain drafts, notes, clippings, photographs, and correspondence. Other publications represented are <span class=\"title\">The Nation</span>, Crimes of War Project, and <span class=\"title\">Los Angeles Times</span>.</p> <p>Also held in this subseries are files related to Schanberg's testimony from the 2013 war crime trials against members of the Khmer Rouge.</p> <p>Arranged at the end of the subseries are photographs from Cambodia. This includes: shots of pre-fall Cambodia by Schanberg, Pran, Al Rockoff, and Ennio Iaccobucci; shots from the U.S. Evacuation of Phnom Penh by Pran and Iaccobucci; and photographs of Schanberg and Pran in the Phnom Penh cable office, during the evacuation, at Surin Refugee Camp, with Pran's family in San Francisco, and in various publicity shots. There are also photographs of Pran at the White House with President Ronald Reagan and Haing S. Ngor. Also present are various publicity shots from <span class=\"title\">The Killing Fields</span>; shots of Schanberg and Pran with actors Sam Waterston and Ngor; and lists of photographs loaned for the production of <span class=\"title\">The Killing Fields</span> and Viking Press edition of <span class=\"title\">The Death and Life of Dith Pran</span>.
