This includes his 1965 article \"Cubans Undaunted by Ordeal at Sea\" and his accompanying account of the story for <span class=\"title\">Times Talk</span>, the staff magazine.</p> <p>The New York State legislature and national politics files address Schanberg's coverage of state politics beginning in 1965, and his tenure as Albany bureau chief. These files hold drafts about abortion reform, changes to New York State divorce law, and his coverage of the 1967 New York constitutional convention. Also contained here are notebooks from his coverage of the 1968 election, including one with notes from an interview with Barry Goldwater.</p> <p>The India files cover Schanberg's reporting as New Delhi bureau chief from 1969 to 1972. These files are represented through notebooks, notepads, drafts, cables, correspondence, and ephemera. Items of note include notebooks from coverage of the East Pakistan Cyclone; Dacca, Bangladesh; and the India-Pakistan War. Also contained with the India files are drafts of the East Pakistan Cyclone story and an interview transcript with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.</p> <p>The Southeast Asia notebooks and Asia stories files detail Schanbeg's time as Singapore bureau chief. These files are represented through notebooks and drafts, and include coverage of the Malaysian elections; a profile of the war correspondent Gloria Emerson for <span class=\"title\">Times Talk</span>; and a rejected piece for the Travel section about experiencing culture shock after returning from abroad.</p> <p>Schanberg's Vietnam War files containing various notes and drafts, including the magazine piece \"The Saigon Follies, or, Trying to Head Them Off at Credibility Gap.\" For files related to Schanberg's time in Cambodia researchers should consult Subseries I.B. Cambodia and <span class=\"title\">The Killing Fields</span>.</p> <p>The expense reports and administrative files document the life of a foreign bureau chief. Held here are files related to Schanberg's residence in Singapore and odds and ends from his desk, such as address books. Some material held here may be addressed to Schanberg's first wife, Janice. Also held here are kits and reports for foreign correspondents, including a report on Poland; Schanberg was to be transferred to Poland in 1975, but delayed his departure in order to continue covering Cambodia.</p> <p>The Metro desk files cover Schanberg's work as Metropolitan editor, beginning in 1977. Files representing this era of Schanberg's career consist of memorandum, notes, and correspondence, including files and photographs about the 1977 New York City blackout.</p> <p>The \"New York\" column files cover Schanberg's return to writing for the <span class=\"title\">Times</span>, focusing on issues, politics, and real estate in 1980s New York City. These files are represented through drafts, clippings, notes, and correspondence. Topics covered include Governor Mario C. Cuomo, the Koch administration, and various real estate developers and developments, including the Westway project, single room occupancy housing for the elderly, and the early dealings of Donald Trump.
