The essays were published in Albany newspapers under the name \"A Citizen,\" which appears at the end of the second draft essay. Yates wrote the pieces in response to a published notice dated December 15, 1794, that anyone cutting or carrying wood from the commons of Stephen Van Rensselaer in his manor, without permission, would be prosecuted for trespass. Yates characterized the action as a deprivation of rights already held rather than a warning of trespass, and an example of private encroachment on common lands. His analysis covers the settlement of Albany through the loss of New Netherland to the English in 1664, the acquisition of land by the Van Rensselaers and others, and the legacy of the patroon system.</p>"}

Essay Number V was published in two parts, the first as Number V on March 27, and the continuation as Number VI on April 3, 1795.</p>"}
