The Alliance in particular advocated for the case of Eddie James Carthan, Jr. Carthan was the first Black mayor of a Mississippi town after Reconstruction, serving as mayor of Tchula. He was beset by numerous challenges, leading to his resignation and culminating in a capital murder charge – he was accused of assassinating the acting mayor, Roosevelt Granderson, a Black man. Carthan was acquitted in 1982 and the attacks against him are generally seen as being orchestrated by a corrupt city council.</p> <p>The materials that follow consist of general statistics and information on Black elected officials in the United States, as well as individual cases concerning them.</p>"}
