{"value"=>"<p>The Pre-Alliance and Beginnings subseries consists of materials which were collected and grouped by the Alliance and reflect its earliest days, as well as the similar organizations that predated it and out of which the Alliance grew. Mainly this concerns organizations dedicated to the cause of Freeing Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners, and this subseries includes extensive materials on Davis' case and acquittal. The materials in this subseries reflect both these precursor organizations, as well as the transitional period between them and the Alliance itself.</p> <p>Charlene Mitchell and some other eventual members of the Alliance were involved in these formative days, with Mitchell serving as Eastern Regional Director of the Committee to Free Angela Davis, which was affiliated with the New York Committee of the same cause. The materials in this series were specifically given the title of Pre-Alliance and Beginnings by the Alliance itself.</p> <p>This subseries is further broken into groups. These are: Committees, covering the various similar grassroots committees dedicated to freeing Angela Davis and political prisoners and that formed the groundwork for the start of the Alliance, with particular emphasis on the New York committee; Correspondence, mostly, but not exclusively, sent to and from the New York Committee to Free Angela Davis and organized alphabetically by last name or subject; Materials specifically related to the case of Angela Davis, including Academics in Support, organization for Angela Davis Day, legal documents, and speeches by Davis; Early Days, which covers the various other national topics that interested the early Alliance and pre-Alliance groups; International, which covers materials on various international causes, as well as international support for Angela Davis; and United Nations to End Genocide, which covers a petition campaign organized by the Continuations Committee of the Emergency Conference to Defend the Right of the Black Panther Party to Exist, which included many future Alliance staff such as Charlene Mitchell, Mike Welch, and Anne Braden.</p> <p>Materials in this subseries includes flyers for events, correspondence, newsletters and other small press, press releases, minutes, invoices and receipts, book reviews and publisher information, various legal briefs, funding information, publications printed by the committees, early organizational structures, petitions, and posters.</p>"}
