{"value"=>"<p>This series documents the work of George Avakian, Anahid Ajemian, and a plethora of recording artists for Columbia, World Pacific, Warner Brothers, RCA, and other record labels, as well as artists not directly associated with Avakian. The series also evidences work by film editor and director Aram Avakian. It has three subseries: IV.A. Recording Sessions and Performances; IV.B. Interviews, Lectures, Home Recordings, and Other Spoken Word Recordings; and IV.C. Video Recordings.</p> <p>Major artists with significant material in the series include Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Charles Lloyd, Sonny Rollins, Anahid Ajemian, Maro Ajemian, the Composers String Quartet, Duke Ellington, Paul Desmond, Dave Brubeck, William Masselos, Keith Jarrett, Cannonball Adderley, Chet Baker, Art Blakey, John Cage, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Bud Freeman, Dizzy Gillespie, Earl Hines, Alan Hovhaness, Freddie Hubbard, Mahalia Jackson, Johnny Mathis, Bob Newhart, and Ravi Shankar.</p> <p>The audio and video recordings, numbering over 1700, comprise studio recording sessions; live performances; interviews and oral histories with Avakian and others; radio and television broadcasts and documentaries; documentary films or video; lectures and panel discussions; home recordings by Louis Armstrong and George Avakian; and promotional films. See the subseries scope notes for more description.</p> <p>Many of the original media containers had papers enclosed which offer more details on the recording or its context. These have been placed in the Insert File (located at the top of subseries IV.A). The existence of this supplemental material is noted with each item. The Insert File is arranged by the six-digit Library identification number at the left of each item in the container list.</p> <p>Some items have significant content unrelated to the main subject of the recording which is described within the container list.</p> <p>Throughout the series, content which is described as \"unidentified\" means only that it was not known to the processing archivist, not that the contents are unidentifiable.</p> <p>Many of the items derived from tape media had two or more tracks on them. The contents for these items are described as \"Track 1:\", \"Track 2:\", etc.</p>"}

{"value"=>"Each audio or video item contains one, two, or three identification codes. All items have a six-digit identification code, assigned by the Library. Many items also contain a second code with a number preceded by the letters F, S, L, or C; these numbers were assigned by Avakian's personal archivists before the collection was acquired by the library, and represent items that were originally open-reel tapes, compact audio cassettes, or digital audio cassettes. No other formats of audio or video were assigned these codes. A small number of items also bear New York Public Library call numbers (for example, *LT-10-A 4658), and some items documenting the Benny Goodman 1962 tour of the Soviet Union have yet another number, originally assigned by George Avakian."}
