The majority of photographs date from the 1980s to the 2000s, and primarily depict Belafonte receiving honorary degrees, and events relating to humanitarian causes. Photographs are arranged alphabetically by award, event, institution, or organization.</p> <p>There are photographs of Belafonte receiving degrees from, or speaking at, Brooklyn College, Columbia University, Dillard University, Howard University, and Wayne State University. Belafonte is also shown receiving awards for his humanitarian work, including the Estelle Witherspoon Lifetime Achievement Award, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation Award, and Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award. Other humanitarian events featured include the 2012 Human Justice Awards Gala, 1988 Frederick Douglass Dinner Awards Gala, and 10th anniversary celebration of USA for Africa.</p> <p>Also of note are photographs from the 1989 Kennedy Center Honors, and contact sheets for the 1965 \"Sunday Evening with the SNCC [Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee]\" fundraiser at which Belafonte performed. This subseries holds a large set of photographs from Belafonte's formal 79th birthday party at the Alhambra Ballroom in New York City, with many celebrities in attendance.</p>"}
