He attended high school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, City College in New York, and Howard University Medical School. After training as a surgeon and ear, nose, and throat specialist in New Orleans, he settled in Detroit, Michigan, as a physician. He and his wife Margaret (Avery) had two children, William Cecil (1942–1966) and Alderman Jr.</p>"}
