{"value"=>"<p>The Africa Regional Secretary sub-series covers Stenhouse's work in the position, which included oversight of UCC partners and UCBWM personnel in ten African countries: Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Togo, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Materials include personnel paperwork (job description and job evaluations), reports, correspondence, budgets and expenditures, and various project descriptions. The group of folders that comprise the Africa Field Trips includes Stenhouse's summaries and full reports of six trips to Africa taken from 1979-1984. The trips were made to several countries primarily in the western and southern regions of Africa that fell under his area of responsibility (e.g., Ghana, Togo, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) and included other countries (e.g., Kenya, Malawi, Swaziland, Zaire), which he visited for conferences or to meet with UCC partners and UCBWM personnel. In addition to the Africa Field Trips, the correspondence contains letters between and among missionaries that discuss problems and concerns that provide deeper insights into the nature of the tensions among UCBWM missionaries, Stenhouse, and the church partners they were charged to serve. These folders are arranged chronologically and include country and names of the missionaries. There is also correspondence containing information on specific churches, seminaries or projects, relevant to the Africa office during Stenhouse's tenure as Secretary. The effort at Inanda Seminary in South Africa was a particular project of interest to him because of its leadership by a woman and focus on education and liberation for girls and women.</p> <p>Speaking engagements and invitations to meetings reflect the significance of Stenhouse's experiences in Africa, not only for him, but for the organizations and congregations that wanted to learn first-hand about the unique and similar struggles for liberation, cultural self-determination, and governance experienced throughout the African continent, and in many instances juxtaposed with the U.S. experience.</p> <p>Budgets and operating protocols for the Africa office are captured through information prepared for meetings of the Board of Directors, budget proposals, and other financial data, from 1980-1986 and are arranged in chronological order.</p> <p>Other materials of interest in the subseries include a folder with information on Andrea Young after she became the African Regional Secretary containing a memo she wrote regarding the lack of support and negative attitude towards the UCBWM's African partners. The subseries concludes with UCBWM board meeting material as it pertained to Africa and other issues; annual reports, overseas personnel handbooks, directories, and UCC/UCBWM history highlights timeline.</p>"}
