{"value"=>"
West of Eden files consist mainly of research files on individuals, containing articles, clippings, research notes, and often a transcript of Stein's interview with the subject. In addition to the main alphabetical run of research files arranged by individual subjects, there are a few larger groupings of research materials on the five major subjects that comprise the five chapters in West of Eden. As with Edie, Stein conducted many more interviews than she chose to include or excerpt in the published book. The interview transcripts included in this collection provide a valuable resource of unpublished commentary from prominent individuals on Los Angeles, the film industry, and the culture and community surrounding it. Interview subjects include Warren Beatty and Annette Bening; Roy Brewer; Truman Capote; Dorothy Chandler; Maude Schuyler Clay; Joan Didion and John Dunne; Julius Epstein; David \"Preacher\" Ewing; Jules Feiffer; Larry Flynt; David Geffen; Frank Gehry; Richard Gully; Tom Hayden; Lillian Hellman; Katharine Hepburn; Dennis Hopper; Walter Hopps; Lauren Hutton; Andrew Kopkind; Timothy Leary; Robert \"Cyclona\" Legorreta; Norman Lloyd; Sue Mengers; Jessica Mitford; Ed Moses; Evelyn Simon Woods Prell; Ed Ruscha; Edward Said; Robert Scheer; William Scheetz; Budd Schulberg; Joel Schumacher; Fiona Shaw; Terry Southern; George Takei; Christopher Trumbo; Katrina, Wendy, and William vanden Heuvel; Gore Vidal; William T. Vollmann; Robert Walker, Jr.; Barbara Warner Howard; Jack Warner, Jr.; Lew Wasserman; Milton Wexler; and Richard Zanuck.

There are also photographs collected by Stein for use in the book, the majority of which are found in the chapter files, and a small amount of manuscript drafts. The process of turning the interviews into the final text of the book is not documented as extensively as it is for Edie. Logistics include outlines, research notes and questions, interview lists and questions, contact information and correspondence with interviewees, correspondence with researchers and editors, photograph permissions, contracts, and agreements. Components include acknowledgements, bibliography, epigraphs, and blurbs.
"}
