The company is considered the very first professional black dramatic company in the twentieth century. Founding member Charles Gilpin, along with co-founders Clarence Muse and Abbie Mitchell and members Dooley Wilson and Andrew Bishop, initially performed dramas written by whites that were proven successful on the stage.</p>"}
