{"value"=>"
Opera singer. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, Jarboro became the first black woman to sing a principal role with an all-white opera company. She performed Aida with the Chicago Opera Company at the Hippodrome in New York City. The New York Times music editor reported, \"The young soprano brought a vivid dramatic sense that kept her impersonation vital without overacting, and an Italian diction remarkably pure and distinct.\" Jarboro's fame, however, was short-lived. Once the American opera establishment realized that she was not Italian but black, her career with the white establishment ended. She went on to work with the National Negro Opera Company and as a concert singer. Jarboro appeared in such plays as Shuffle Along, and venues such as Town Hall and Carnegie Hall.
"}
